Our Mission
Our mission is to provide K-12 educators with research-based reading
practices in order to help them develop and nurture pervasive and persuasive
reading cultures in their schools that will enable all students to read at
their highest possible level of attainment.
The traits of a pervasive and persuasive reading culture include:
- strong instructional leadership by both administrators and teacher leaders
to include shared decision making regarding vital curricular and
instructional issues;
- high expectations and accountability for students, teachers, and parents,
i.e. a sense of academic press that is shared by the entire school
community;
- a relentless commitment to results driven by meaningful and measurable
short- and long-term goals;
- a research-based curriculum;
- a well-designed instructional delivery system that offers coordinated and
differentiated instructional interventions along the
learning/skill/knowledge continuum;
- comprehensive assessment of student progress that includes early
identification and frequent monitoring of students at-risk of reading
failure;
- the scrupulous use of allocated instructional time and the creative
marshalling of extra-curricular instructional time (e.g. vacation and/or
before and after school time);
- the integration and coordination of special services (e.g. special
education, Title I, remedial reading, and speech);
- constant communication and coordination between and among teachers
regarding curriculum and instruction;
- ongoing and meaningful staff development;
- the support of parents and the community for literacy; and
- the availability and allocation of adequate resources.
